He is the LORD our God; His judgments govern the whole earth. Remember His covenant forever— the promise He ordained for a thousand generations
1 Chronicles 16:14-15 (HCSB)
Just a friendly reminder…will you include the Lord on your day of Thanksgiving?
In the peanuts cartoon it is the character of Linus (who I suspect was a Baptist) who, after all the madness of preparation for the feast on ordinary things such as jellybeans, pretzels, popcorn, and toast reminds the gang of the reason for the celebration and in the remembrance Linus is transformed. When Linus quotes the prayer that was prayed by Elder William Brewster at the first Thanksgiving meal, it is the only moment in the entire cartoon that his security blanket is not visible.
In the act of remembrance, which generates prayer, Linus’ experiences security in worship (the safety of home), he doesn’t need the blanket and it is the dwelling in God’s past acts which give this little historian the boldness to help his friends enter that experience as well. It is interesting that Charles Shultz, the creator of the peanuts gang once said that Linus represented his spiritual side.
11/12 – Reminder Day. Have a hard time remembering to be thankful? Put reminders up around your house, a note on your refrigerator, for example, that says “Give Thanks”.
